On November 27, 1830, Our Lady appeared to St. Catherine Labouré standing on a globe with rays of light streaming from her hands: “These rays symbolize the graces I shed upon those who ask for them. The gems from which rays do not fall are the graces for which souls forget to ask.” An oval frame formed around the Blessed Virgin, and within it in letters of gold: “O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee,” Our Lady asked St. Catherine to have a medal struck in her honor, promising great graces for all who wear it with devotion.
